SECOND HAND
CLOTHING & GOODS
Each winter HOPESTREET
Urban Compassion comes under considerable strain responding to the
appeals of both homeless people and local residents. Requests for
clothing, blankets and food become more urgent.
Could you please consider
supporting us in some of the following ways...
* donations of food items,
particularly tinned food (meat or fish, vegs etc) are always in
short supply
* good clean blankets
* warm clothes -socks,
jackets, jumpers etc
Our Op Shops at Woolloomooloo,
Glebe and Darlinghurst provide an inviting selection of new and
used good quality clothing and household goods and your contributions
will be warmly received
But also financial donations.
As you consider the prospect of doing your tax return at the end
of this financial year, please consider making a tax deductible
donation to HopeStreet. We urgently need funding to continue running
our ministry and the much needed services we offer.
One of the good things
about winter is having a piping hot meal after a hard day's work,
kicking off the shoes and relaxing in front of the TV with the heater
on. After a few hours it's time to go to sleep in a warm bed. There's
nothing nicer than hearing the wind or rain outside and being able
to snuggle under a doona feeling warm, safe and dry.
You will be aware that
many thousands of people in Sydney don't share our experiences.
In Woolloomooloo, Darlinghurst and Glebe, HopeStreet staff and volunteers
encounter many people who struggle with cold winter nights.
I recall arriving in Woolloomooloo
early one Thursday morning about 7:30am. In the park opposite as
well as right next to the HopeStreet van were a number of men &
women huddled under newspapers, plastic cover sheets and old sleeping
bags. Life on the streets is always a precarious existence- in winter
it is very much worse.
I know of many other people
who are quite poor in our area and who have no heating in their
homes. They cannot afford the initial cost of purchasing a heater.
Obviously the health of such people suffers during this time of
the year.
Life on the streets has
another side to it as well. Some of our volunteers who have spent
many cold nights sheltered under a bridge or street are now housed
and active in the programs of HopeStreet. They have become some
of our most important volunteers in our Op Shop and Backshed Cafe.
Through your support lives
have been and will be changed forever. Thanks for your partnership
in allowing us to be your hands and feet and helping us to share
the Good News that Jesus really does care.
