GLEBE
COMMUNITY CHURCH
In 1993 a church planting project began in the public housing estate.
From this project grew the current Glebe Community Church congregation
(GCC). GCC consists almost exclusively of people from the Glebe
public housing estate whose lives have often been marked by illness,
disability or addiction. About fifteen regularly attend Sunday services.
The congregation is structurally still a project of HopeStreet,
though it has it’s own leadership and largely determines it’s
own direction. The members of this small congregation are but the
inner circle of a much wider community work which includes an Op
Shop and HaveAChat Cafe- both staffed largely by local volunteers,
regular free and subsidized food distribution network, Bible study
and discussion groups, community Art Classes, pastoral care and
support for a large number of elderly and disabled residents and
a growing sense of community amongst people with intellectual disability.
From the earliest days
of GCC it was agreed that the public housing estate was the area
in which we are called to work. This aim is not to exclude others,
but to give direction to the ministry activities that are undertaken.
Increasingly young volunteers
from other churches, both inside and outside Glebe are offering
assistance in running projects, attending church and joining to
provide support for the church and community. We also maintain a
friendly relationship with all the other churches in Glebe as we
work alongside each other sharing God's love with the people of
Glebe and the surrounding suburbs.
