Inner City

HopeStreet - Inner City is committed to putting faith into action by providing compassionate care to marginalised inner-city residents.

Many community members are experiencing homelessness, dealing with addiction, mental health, physical health and legal issues, in addition to having diminished employment opportunities.

Supporting people of all ages, our team helps to empower people, as they confront complex issues and to explore pathways toward education, training and employment.

HopeStreet directs their help at the street level by building relationships with individuals in need, creating avenues of trust and forming partnerships to be a consistent presence and support for whatever journey a person may be on.

What we do

Low Interest Loans

Giving people a fair go with a loan they can afford to pay

StepUP low interest loans are a fair and affordable option for families and individuals on low incomes, who require funds for personal and household expenses up to the value of $3000. Alternative options such as payday lenders or loan sharks provide little to no help in breaking the cycle of debt, and by the time interest is paid, the value of the loan can increase by up to 400%. Families and individuals receiving government benefits or who have a marked credit history also come up against barriers when they seek loans through traditional channels, such as banks, so StepUP gives them a fair go and provides them with a loan they can afford to repay.

No Interest Loans

Giving individuals and families access to safe and affordable loans

Our No Interest Loans are absolutely free of interest, fees, charges or penalties. They’re about giving individuals and families access to safe and affordable loans for everyday items such as white goods, car repairs, school uniforms, computers and medical bills.

People with poor credit history, or a string of bad debt and no spare cash, really struggle to find the funds for these every day or emergency costs, which can lead to substantial hardship. This basic financial support means that individuals and families are able to look towards their future, with a loan that empowers them, rather than adding to the cycle of debt.

Community Development

Our Community Development team works with people who are experiencing marginalisation in Woolloomooloo and surrounding suburbs, with a focus towards people living in social housing or sleeping rough.

The Community Development team aims to contribute to a healthy, integrated and empowered local community through a range of services, including:

  • Case Work
  • Advocacy
  • Counselling
  • No Interest Loans
  • Pastoral support
  • Referrals to other service providers

Our Community Development Centre also provides welcoming places for community members to gather and connect via:

Urban Education and Engagement

We offer opportunities for you to learn about and experience some of the challenges and complex issues for people living on the margins of our society in Sydney.

We do this through interactive workshops, internships, speaking engagements and education seminars including:

Urban HopeWalks

Walk through the community of Woolloomooloo with one of our staff who can share insights into the local history as you see firsthand the contrast of living standards in the area and segregation between classes represented.

Nights at the Cathedral

Come spend a night in Woolloomooloo. Whilst in the safety of a HopeStreet building, discover how hard it can be for many of our homeless at night and the unpredictability of rough sleeping.

The heartbeat of our program is to Educate, Experience and Encourage: Our aim is to educate participants on the challenges that exist in marginalised communities, including homelessness, mental health and employment difficulties. You are invited to experience what HopeStreet Inner City does and the community we serve in. We trust you will leave encouraged to love your neighbours wherever we are.

If you can’t make it to Woolloomooloo, invite us to come to you! We’re happy to provide speakers to share at your organisation, church or school through workshops, speaking engagements and education seminars.

Gambling Help

HopeStreet Gambling Help currently offers two vital services: Gambling Help and Financial Counselling.

A gambling problem can be identified by spending more money on gambling than is affordable as well as spending too much time gambling. Gambling problems may not be easily disclosed but could be accompanied by social difficulties, relationship issues, financial problems, housing and legal difficulties, mental health issues including depression, anxiety and suicidal thinking.

Financial counselling is available to assist with financial issues from problem gambling.

Our professional Gambling Counsellors deliver face to face, telephone or online counselling. No referrals are required.

Treatment for problem gambling

A 6-8 week evidence based structured Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Treatment Program, which includes:

  • strategies for harm minimisation (controlled gambling) or abstinence (quitting completely)
  • sessions on maintaining recovery and managing relapse
  • Follow up sessions to support recovery goals
  • Self Exclusion Programs, which apply to approximately 35 venues (including AHA hotels and Clubs NSW) if requested
Help for family and friends
  • Counselling for partners or family members affected by someone else's gambling problem
  • Individual, couple and/or family sessions and workshops are available to provide information, strategies, self-care, peer support and break down feelings of isolation

Financial assistance for this project was provided by the New South Wales Government from the Responsible Gambling Fund and enables us to offer gambling counselling to people living in and around suburbs such as Alexandria, Centennial Park, Chippendale, Darlinghurst, Kings Cross, Paddington, Pyrmont, Redfern, Sydney CBD, Surry Hills, Ultimo and Woolloomooloo, Bondi, Bondi Junction, North Bondi, Clovelly, Coogee, Kensington, Kingsford, Matraville, Eastgardens, Daceyville, Hillsdale, Maroubra,, Botany, Eastlakes, and Randwick.
