Mayfield

Our HopeStreet - Mayfield centre is a welcoming place for people living with disadvantage in the local community, where they can find hope and support every day.

Whether it be a healthy meal when it is needed most, an opportunity to shower and wash clothes, having someone to sit and talk to and share thoughts, feelings and worries, or addressing key issues including social and financial exclusion, mental health challenges, drug and alcohol dependence and housing needs - providing hope is the lifeblood of what we do.

Living a life with issues that many people don’t understand or have preconceptions about can leave people feeling isolated. It is at Mayfield that friendships are formed and people feel valued and welcomed in to a community that understands them.

We admit that we can’t fix the world. But we can do something and that something is to provide hope to people who need it.

What we do

No Interest Loans

Giving individuals and families access to safe and affordable loans

Our No Interest Loans are absolutely free of interest, fees, charges or penalties. They’re about giving individuals and families access to safe and affordable loans for everyday items such as white goods, car repairs, school uniforms, computers and medical bills.

People with poor credit history, or a string of bad debt and no spare cash, really struggle to find the funds for these every day or emergency costs, which can lead to substantial hardship. This basic financial support means that individuals and families are able to look towards their future, with a loan that empowers them, rather than adding to the cycle of debt.

Community Space

The Community Centre plays an integral role in the Newcastle community as safe and welcoming place for homeless persons and people living on the margins.

The Centre provides a place where some of the most lonely and vulnerable people in our community are supported to address key issues, such as personal health, drug and alcohol dependence, mental health and housing needs. Responding with compassion, practical care and support, the service assists clients in developing skills to build independence and resilience.

Low Interest Loans

Giving people a fair go with a loan they can afford to pay

StepUP low interest loans are a fair and affordable option for families and individuals on low incomes, who require funds for personal and household expenses up to the value of $3000.

Alternative options such as payday lenders or loan sharks provide little to no help in breaking the cycle of debt, and by the time interest is paid, the value of the loan can increase by up to 400%. Families and individuals receiving government benefits or who have a marked credit history also come up against barriers when they seek loans through traditional channels, such as banks, so StepUP gives them a fair go and provides them with a loan they can afford to repay.

Street-based Outreach

HopeStreet provides a street-based outreach service that provides practical care and support to vulnerable people in the inner city of Newcastle, including people who are experiencing homelessness, people who are socially isolated and who are living on the margins.

With our outreach street van, our team provides free meals, tea and coffee, cold drinks, clothing, blankets, referral and advocacy services. The service also operates a Saturday night BBQ in the Newcastle CBD, which engages and feeds people living on the street or people who are struggling with food affordability.

Food Support

HopeStreet welcomes many people living with disadvantage through its doors every day, to enjoy nutritious, wholesome sit-down meals.

Most often, they are homeless and the meal we provide might be the only meal they eat that day. It’s not just about the meal though; HopeStreet is a safe and welcoming place where positive friendships are built and the sense of community is strong. Food support extends beyond sit down meals at HopeStreet; crisis food packs are also provided often to individuals and families who lack the basic items to make a meal.
